Translation and Subtitles

After having set on our colour correction and the layout of the video it was time to produce each individual videos. While Dominik had the task to render the videos - he was the only one who had the right colour correction tool on his computer - Randy and I discussed the flow of our overall video. What dramaturgy did we want to portray? How can we bring our message the most effectively across?

We analysed all transcripts videos and came to some agreements, however, we felt like we could not proceed with this step due to the fact that we were missing Olga's translation. We had a total of four different stories from her. Although we had received a short summary of each story on the day of the interview we still weren't sure how she phrased her story and whether there were still some information missing. Luckily I managed to organise to meet up with Olga in the afternoon to work on the translations.

After lunch I met up with Olga and we sat down together to translate her video. She was incredibly helpful. While she listened to the audio and translated her story, I sat next to her and typed what she was saying and noting down the crucial times.

Once she had left I started to add the English and German subtitles to her video. Although knew certain time points, it was still very tricky to define the exact moment the subtitle should appear and disappear - especially when you don't understand a single word that is being said. After a while I interestingly enough started to recognise vocal patterns during her speech which indicated to certain contents in her translation. I could easily recognise the Russian word "and" (и - pronounced "e") which served as a helpful anchor point. Other Russian words are similar to English and also gave me a sense of context.

Body language was also a great tool in figuring out what she was saying - it reminded me of our initial stage of our process, where communication through body language was so crucial.

Simultaneously, I created a Premier Pro template which I handed out to the other three so that they could work on adding the subtitles to all other videos.
